Chocolate Chip Peanut Butter Crunch Cookies

So, my wife and I were craving cookies this weekend. We couldn't decide between making chocolate chip or peanut butter. Then I had this great idea and told my wife "Why not have the best of both!" So, we slightly altered our favorite chocolate chip cookie recipe and "Chocolate Chip Peanut Butter Crunch Cookies" were born! Some friends came over, tried them, and fell in love. We hope you will too!

Don't Be A Victim Of Bait & Switch

Last Fall, the ABC News show 20/20 aired a feature story on a carpet cleaning scam that many un-ethical companies employ - bait and switch advertising. These companies advertise ridiculously low prices for their services. (the bait) Typically, once they are in your home, they tell you that the advertised price is for "basic water cleaning only," which will not do a satisfactory cleaning job. They then pressure you into buying a whole list of add-on services, (the switch) often bringing the total price for their services to several hundred dollars!

According 20/20's website, here are three mistakes that many consumers make when falling prey to bait and switch carpet cleaners:

Choosing a cleaner based on low price
Most people are attracted by low price, but some cleaners use price as the bait for their misleading advertising. They offer a cheap price - usually between $3.95 and $9.95 per room; then, once they're in your home or office, they pressure you into buying add-ons. It's as if you were buying a car and found out that the dealer was charging you extra for the tires and steering wheel. Professional carpet cleaning is not as cheap as some unethical cleaners would like you to believe. Low price could also mean the cleaner has cheap equipment or untrained personnel who won't do a good job.

Not getting references
Any cleaner can say anything about his past jobs. Sadly, some of what he says may not be true. So first ask friends to recommend cleaners they've been happy with in the past. Another option is to get references from the cleaner and check with them to see if the work was done to their satisfaction.

Choosing a cleaner that doesn't offer a money-back guarantee
Every cleaning company should be fully accountable for its work. If you aren't pleased with the job in every way, the cleaner should return free of charge and re-clean. If you're still not satisfied, you shouldn't have to pay for it, period. Not all cleaners offer a guarantee. Or, if they do, the guarantee may be "limited". Ask the cleaner if he offers a money-back guarantee and then make sure he includes his guarantee on his written quotation.

Pet Accident?

Follow these spotting directions:

• Blot up as much of the urine as possible. Do not scrub. When you think you have as much of it up as possible, blot the area again using a towel soaked in warm water. Be careful not to get the area too wet—you may force the urine deeper. Blot the area again with a dry towel.

• Next, apply a low-residue carpet spot remover, let sit for 60 seconds and again blot the spot.

• Finally, fold a dry towel to several layers, place over the spot and apply at least 10 pounds of weight. Let it sit overnight. When you remove the towel, fluff the carpet up and allow to dry. If the spot returns after a few days, repeat the last two steps.

After the carpet dries, stick your nose down to the carpet and give it a good whiff. Any odor? If so, please be very careful what you use. Most store-bought deodorizers only work in mild odor situations. Don’t over-use them, you may do more harm than good.

Please give us a call us if you need any help!

Carpets Effect on Allergies:

Don't Toss Them...Their Awesome!

Spring has finally sprung and along with that come lots of Allergies for a lot of us in the Roseville area.

The science of indoor air quality is very interesting and relatively new. In the past, the focus was on the quality of the outside air and the interest was in lowering emissions of all types into the air. But, as we now spend more time indoors - an average of 90% of our time - indoor air quality has become a concern to the EPA, as well as government and private health organizations.
Following the energy-saving efforts, buildings and homes are now much more air-tight, leaving little opportunity for diluting the indoor air with fresh air from outside. Indoor air has thus become more polluted.

But, what’s the connection between indoor air quality and carpets?
In the past, physicians recommended that their asthma and allergy-suffering patients remove carpeting from the home. It was erroneously thought that carpeting exasperated their conditions.
Recently, the EPA performed a study of hundreds of homes, schools and office buildings and concluded that the choice of carpeting as a floor covering was actually beneficial in the fight against asthma and allergies.

When scientifically tested, the air in the “breathing zone” above carpets was found to contain fewer allergens than the air above hard surfaces. Carpet tends to collect and hold the allergens out of the air, where they remain, until the carpet is vacuumed or professionally cleaned. In contrast, allergens that settle on hard surface flooring, tend to be redistributed to the breathing zone with normal foot traffic or the simple act of running a broom over the flooring surface.
One unfortunate result of the EPA’s study is that we now know that many families removed carpeting from their homes in an effort to reduce allergy symptoms, only to find that they gained no improvement in their conditions. Their carpeting was an asset, rather than a detriment, to the quality of their indoor air.

In concluding that carpeting is a benefit to indoor air, the EPA now recommends that carpeting be cleaned at least every 6 months to rid the carpeting of these allergens. A carpet that is not regularly maintained has a reduced ability to collect indoor air pollutants.

Tips for Reducing Indoor Allergens

Here are some tips for reducing indoor allergens in your home and specifically, in your carpeting - helping you to keep your home a healthy one for you and your family:

Vacuum, vacuum, vacuum. This cannot be stressed enough. You should vacuum at least twice a week, more often if you have pets. Vacuuming helps rid your carpeting of dust, dust mite feces, animal hair and dander, human hair and dead skin, mold spores, dead bugs and abrasive - carpet life shortening - sand and soil. Make sure that you use a vacuum cleaner that has a high efficiency HEPA filtering system. If you need suggestions for choosing a new vacuum, call us.
Don’t sweep your hard surface flooring. Sweeping redistributes allergens to the air. Vacuuming your floors, followed by a damp mop, will help keep the air your family breathes cleaner.
Adopt a "no shoes" policy in your home. This will keep outdoor pollutants from entering the home.
Make sure that you change your filters monthly. Consider using high-efficiency HEPA air filters.

We hope your find these tips helpful. Follow these simple tips, and not only will you have a healthier home, but your carpeting will last longer also!

Cleaning Carpets in the Winter?

Many people feel that they should wait until after winter to have their carpets cleaned. Let’s look at a couple of reasons why some may feel that way...

“The carpet will get dirty right away.”
I agree. If you come in with wet, muddy shoes on. But how about taking your shoes off before you walk on the carpet? I could go into great detail explaining all the bad things that can be tracked onto your carpet, visible and invisible, winter or summer, but I don’t want to spoil your dinner. Then there are the cutting soils that can be tracked from your shoes that cause abrasion and cause those ugly traffic lanes in the areas you walk the most. So, this is an excellent time to train yourself to take your shoes off. Your carpet will thank you for it!

“It will take longer to dry.”
It could take a little longer. During the summer months carpets can take around 4 to 6 hours to dry on average. In the winter, usually it takes between 5 to 7 hours. I have two high-powered fans that I put into place when I'm done cleaning that certainly help speed up the drying process. So, in most cases, the difference between dry time in the winter versus the summer is very little.

One more thing to consider is that I am not as busy during the winter. This usually means you can schedule your cleaning appointment when you want and not have to wait. I also have more time to do some extras that you may not have thought about. Like your couch or area rug that you've been meaning to have cleaned.
In the winter, we tend to spend most of our time indoors. So, having clean carpets greatly improves our indoor air that we're forced to breathe. Also, removing the soil covering the fibers makes the colors brighter, it feels softer and smells better. Sounds just like what the doctor ordered to make you feel better on a dreary winter’s day!
